General Information


The VETOMAC XIV will be held in the Congress Centre situated in the Alameda Campus of the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon.

The Conference Language will be in English. Abstracts and full length papers will only be accepted in English (UK) language. Presentations must also be made in English language.

The native language in Portugal is Portuguese. English is widely spoken as a second language by the majority of Portuguese, while French and Spanish are also spoken at a good extent.



The official Currency in Portugal is EURO (€). You can check exchange rates in the Banco de Portugal.



Portugal follows the Schengen Agreement provision and the subsequent acquit concerning short term visa issues stays of up to three (3) months in the Schengen area. The citizens of these countries are not subject to border controls within the common area (airlines or other carriers require identification – I.D. card or passport of any other piece of identification issued by a public authority). Citizens of the EU countries do not need a visa to enter Portugal (and the Schengen area). They only have to provide a passport or an I.D. card at the border.

If you are not EU citizen, contact the Portuguese Embassy in your country or consult the website of Portuguese Embassy in London for extensive information and useful links. Letters of invitation can be obtained from the Congress Organisers upon request, via the registration form.



Accommodation can be requested to the Congress Organisers via the registration form. Nevertheless, own arrangements are also possible. Check recommended hotels.



Lisbon has a very good climate; in summer the weather is mostly sunny and dry, with temperature ranging between 16 to 30°C. Check the site of the Instituto de Meteorologia for weather forecast.



The main voltage in Portugal is 220V-240V, 50Hz. Check for plug types in Electricity around the World or consult the figure below

It is the responsibility of each participant to get appropriate insurance. The Local Organizing Committee is neither responsible for the health problems of the participants nor for losses. The visitors from abroad are recommended to take out insurance in the country of their origin.



Opening hours: 8:30-15:00 (Monday-Friday)

Most Portuguese banks will exchange traveller's cheques as well as cash. ATMs are frequently located on streets, functioning 24h, 7days a week. Credit cards are accepted by numerous hotels, restaurants, shops and gas stations.



Most pharmacies open from 9 to 21h from Monday to Friday and from 9 to 19h on Saturday.



Shops generally open from Monday to Friday (9h - 19h) and on reduced hours on Saturdays. Shopping malls are opened every day from 9h to 23h.



Smoking will be forbidden inside the conference building.
